Theyyam
61cm X 61cm
Theyyam is a dance form from Kerala in India. Where people dress up in a traditional attire and dance to worship the deities. Theyyam costumes, while visually striking and often perceived as "demonic" due to their intense colours, elaborate designs, and sometimes ferocious expressions, are not inherently demonic. Instead, they are a powerful representation of deities and ancestral spirits within the Theyyam ritualistic tradition of Kerala, India. The costumes are designed to evoke awe, reverence, and a sense of the divine, not fear or evil. It strongly reminds me of the fierce representation of God's who took the demonic avatar to end the evil from the world. Like Kaali or Shiva or Vishnu. It strongly reminds me of the harsh realities of today's world where necessary evils of war is all around us.
